Waste Removal in Hamilton - What is Acceptable Waste?

  • Contaminated soil*
  • Oil
  • Paint
  • Propane tanks


*Asbestos, contaminated soils, and caustic chemicals should only be handled by trained professionals. If you are looking for a way to safely dispose of these types of materials, we may be able to provide you with a reference. Otherwise, there are numerous resources available online.

Recycle Bin-Prohibited Items with the City of Hamilton 

In Hamilton, you can recycle a number of items that cannot be disposed of through the city’s curb-side garbage collection and recycling programs, or in BIZ Bins’ roll-off waste bins. Recycling items is free, but non-recyclables will be charged a waste-disposal fee. At these centres, you can recycle caustic and environmentally hazardous materials (e.g., batteries, paints, non-rigid plastics, styrofoam, yard waste, furniture, and other items), such as:

  • Appliances (e.g., freezers, microwaves, washers, dryers, etc.)

  • Asphalt shingles

  • Auto batteries

  • Auto fluids

  • Batteries — phones, electronics, rechargeables

  • Bed frames

  • Dryer sheets and stir sticks

  • Electric motors

  • Eyeglasses

  • Firearms

  • Fluorescent tubes and light bulbs

  • Garage doors

  • Greasy/soiled paper

  • Hot tubs

  • Kitty litter

  • Latex paints, varnishes, and stains

  • Nails and screws

  • Pool chemicals
